Kidneys or the spine?
The Phytotherapy Centre is frequently visited by patients who suffer from low back pains. Almost a half of them asks for some herbs that would soothe the pain they feel in the area of kidneys. A majority of them has no kidney or urinary tract disease, but the source of their pain is located in the spine or in the spinal muscles in the lumbar area. When patients receive this information, they react with surprise and disbelief. It is probable that when such patients visit a pharmacy or herbal store and ask for 'something for kidneys', they are never asked to explain where the source of the pain is located and that is why they use inappropriate medicines.
Is it possible to distinguish a kidney pain from a pain in the motor system? Yes, it is. It had better be done by a doctor, but a patient may recognize general characteristics of the problems on his or her own.

Kidneys |
Spine |
The location of pain |
A pain in the lumbar area, usually in the upper part but sometimes radiating towards the inguinal area |
Pain usually in lumbosacral area (lower than in case of kidneys), local or radiating towards legs and/or buttocks |
Type |
Rather sharp, intensified by even delicate shaking the loins, e.g. a gentle (!) punch |
Rather blunt, intensified when bending with accompanying compression pain of the spine or near the spine and/or pain of skin fold in these areas |
Causes of the ailments |
No obvious cause, sometimes being penetrated with cold |
Usually following effort, injury, catching a chill and/or a lot of stress |
Accompanying ailments |
Symptoms of inflammatory condition, fever, burning sensation while urinating, frequent urinating |
Usually no symptoms of inflammatory condition, sometimes pains in buttocks and/or legs |
Additional examinations |
Symptoms of infection or nephrolithiasis in typical urinalysis, early ESR, increased number of leukocytes in blood serum |
No symptoms of infection in urinary tract in typical urinalysis; no deviation in additional examinations |
|
All the aforementioned characteristics may differ from one patient to another. A typical urinalysis is the most objective and it may be performed in every analytical laboratory. Urine must be examined in the morning after having been collected to a sterile container which is available from a pharmacy or laboratory.
Treating spinal pain is completely different from treating nephric infections. When kidneys are the problem, Urobon is recommended. When a patient suffers from spinal pains, a manual therapy, performed at the Phytotherapy Centre, produces the best results. Among herbs, spinal balsam or anti-rheumatic tincture are recommended to be applied on the areas of pain and Artrobon (2 capsules twice a day) to be taken orally. In case of doubt a patient should visit a doctor.
