Varicose veins
This ailment affects women four times more often than men. Although varicose veins are common, it must be taken into consideration that treating them neglectfully may cause serious complications, such as crural ulceration or vascular embolism.
The cream containing Witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) and Horse-chestnut (Aesculus) is recommended in treating the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, such as swelling and spasms of legs, the feelings of pruritus, pain and/or heaviness in legs, as it has anti-exudative and tonic effects on veins. The cream may be used for varicose veins in shins, haemorrhoids, post-surgery and post-traumatic soft tissue oedema and/or spider veins in cosmetics. It contains extracts from Horse-chestnut and Witch-hazel and essential oils.
Horse-chestnut is one of the best-known herbs. It has multidirectional curative effects on the vascular system: it reduces fragility, improves elasticity, makes the blood flow easier and counteracts the emergence of vascular clots. The extract from Horse-chestnut facilitates the absorption of serous fluid from the spot of a post-traumatic oedema. It has anti-bacterial, anti-phlogistic and styptic effects on the skin and mucous membrane.
Witch-hazel has anti-phlogistic, styptic and anti-coagulative effects, which make it perfect for treating varicose veins. The cream also contains two essential oils: lavender oil and cypress oil. Lavender oil soothes oedema and pain in legs, which are common for this ailment. Whereas cypress oil is especially helpful in treating spider veins which always appear on the legs of patients suffering from varicose veins.
When describing the treatment of varicose veins another preparation containing the fruit of Horse-chestnut, Venobon, must be mentioned. It has beneficial effects on veins and capillary vessels. It improves circulation and soothes the symptoms of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and post-traumatic oedema. It is effective thanks to the combination of two excellent herbs: the aforementioned fruit of Horse-chestnut and the leaf of Ginkgo biloba.
The leaf of Ginkgo is extremely significant in improving circulation, especially in the lower limbs. Similarly to Horse-chestnut, it seals capillary vessels and simultaneously distends them and thus facilitates blood circulation in them. It is also very important in treating trophic crural ulceration. The use of both Ginkgo biloba and Horse-chestnut is a perfect combination in treating such ailments.
However, if varicose veins are large, a leg is constantly warm and the varicose vein spots are reddened, a surgery on varicose veins will be lesser evil as it will minimize the risk of complications.
